Sentiment of Virginia Voters and the Press toward
Governor Bob McDonnell and challenger Creigh Deeds

Sentiment Analysis tools are used to detect polarity of opinion statements about any object a user chooses.  In this case, we ran all of our sources, which include over 45 thousand domestic and international news and blogs through our sentiment analysis engine and did a simple query for Creigh Deeds vs Bob McDonnell.

Despite some harsh words of each candidate towards his opponent, our data suggest that sentiment of the Virginia voter and the press is trending upward for both candidates as we enter the final month of the gubernatorial race.

We could refine the query further, by selecting news versus social media sources, or select only regional media sources south of the Beltway, for example.   However, given the amount of time until the elections, we will focus our energy on identifying voter sentiment on specific issues of importance to Virginians… more importantly voter sentiment on the linguistics used to describe those issues.  Is there a difference, for example, in sentiment toward green energy versus renewable energy?

Which issues are the greatest “hot buttons” for Virginia voters this election?  How do voters feel about special interest groups that support the various candidates?  There are so many questions that up until now required extensive polling.  Today, with sentiment analysis, we can tap into such information quickly and effectively.    We would love your ideas of issues we could track in the Virginia election.  Please email your suggestions to earhart@sentimetrix.com.
